Remedies for Itchy Scalp
By Nellie Day
An itchy scalp can drive a person crazy, especially when he doesn't know the cause. In many cases, the cause of itchy scalp is dandruff, which occurs when dry, old or dead skin forms flakes on top of the head. The formulation of these flakes alone may cause itchiness, which can be compounded once they build up in your hair. Fortunately, there are easy, inexpensive remedies for curing dandruff and an itchy scalp.
Shampoos
Chemicals and dyes in some shampoos and bar soaps can irritate the skin, causing it to become dry, flaky and itchy. You should never wash your hair with bar soap, which can significantly dry out your hair and scalp. You should also switch to a hypoallergenic shampoo to prevent any further irritation. Brands such as Paul Mitchell make shampoo specifically for people with itchy scalp. Other brands, such as Selsun Blue, make a dandruff shampoo.
Chamomile
Chamomile can soothe and relax the scalp, causing it to itch less when applied to the head. Boil bags of chamomile tea as directed. After the tea cools, remove the bags and apply the tea to the scalp. It should provide a calming effect that will last for the next 24 hours. To enhance the effects of chamomile, some people add rosemary to the tea mixture. Chop up three pieces of rosemary and add them to the boiling tea. Once the tea has cooled, strain out the rosemary and apply to your scalp.
Prevention
Once you know what is making your scalp itchy, it's easier to remedy the problem. A diet lacking fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamins A and C can lead to poor skin quality, which can lead to dandruff. A zinc deficiency can also negatively effect the skin. If you're not getting enough zinc from foods such as beans, seeds, nuts, whole grains, meat and dairy, try a supplement. For women, a yeast infection may cause itchy scalp. This can be controlled with a trip to the doctor and a diet high in dairy products. Dry scalp can be caused by poor circulation or blood flow to the head. Giving yourself a scalp massage once or twice a day may improve this condition. Finally, stress can lead to sleeplessness, poor diet and anxiety, all of which may cause dandruff or the nervous habit of scratching one's head. Control stress and regulate your sleeping and eating habits.
